This Fire Action If You Discover Or Suspect A Fire Sign provides a comprehensive set of step by step emergency instructions explaining the actions occupants should take if they discover or suspect a fire. The sign covers raising the alarm, calling the fire brigade, using appropriate firefighting equipment where safe, evacuating the building, closing doors and windows, reporting to the assembly point and avoiding unnecessary risks.

The first instruction tells occupants to sound the alarm by operating the nearest fire alarm call point. Promptly raising the alarm helps alert other people within the building and allows the premises emergency procedures to begin as quickly as possible.

The sign also provides a blank space for the telephone number used to call the fire brigade. This allows the sign to be completed with the appropriate number or site specific information required by the premises emergency procedure. In the UK, the emergency services can normally be contacted by dialling 999 or 112.

Any telephone information added to the sign should be clear, accurate and kept up to date. Where an internal switchboard, security number or other site specific contact must be used, the displayed information should correspond exactly with the established emergency arrangements.

The third instruction advises that, if possible, the fire may be tackled using the appropriate firefighting equipment provided. This is accompanied by an important warning not to endanger yourself or others while doing so.

Portable firefighting equipment should only be used where the person is capable of using it safely, the correct extinguisher or other equipment is available, the fire is small enough to tackle and a clear means of escape remains accessible. Nobody should place themselves at unnecessary risk attempting to fight a developing fire.

The instruction to leave the building by the nearest available exit reinforces the importance of evacuating promptly. Occupants should use the nearest safe escape route rather than automatically returning by the route through which they entered the building.

Fire exits, corridors, stairways and other escape routes should remain clear and accessible at all times. Where one route is affected by smoke, fire or another hazard, occupants should use an alternative available escape route in accordance with the premises fire safety arrangements.

The sign instructs occupants to close all doors and windows to help contain smoke and fire. Closing doors can help maintain fire compartmentation and reduce the spread of smoke and flames, provided this can be done safely and without delaying evacuation.

The additional Fire Door Keep Shut instruction reinforces the importance of keeping designated fire doors closed. Fire doors should not be wedged or propped open unless an approved hold open or free swing device forms part of the buildings fire safety system.

A dedicated space is provided for the location of the assembly point. This should be completed accurately before the sign is relied upon, helping occupants understand where they are expected to report after leaving the building.

Once at the assembly point, occupants should report to the person in charge and follow any further instructions provided by fire wardens, building management or the Fire and Rescue Service. Remaining at the designated location can help with accounting for staff, visitors and contractors.

The final instructions reinforce several important fire safety rules, including Do Not Take Risks and Do Not Stop To Collect Personal Belongings. Evacuation should not be delayed to collect coats, bags, phones or other possessions.

The instruction Do Not Use Lifts reminds occupants that ordinary passenger lifts should not normally be used during a fire emergency. Any arrangements involving specially designed evacuation lifts or firefighting lifts should be determined by the specific fire strategy and emergency plan for the building.

The instruction Do Not Re-enter The Building For Any Reason Unless Authorised To Do So helps prevent occupants from returning to a potentially dangerous area. Re-entry should only take place once authorised personnel or the Fire and Rescue Service confirm that it is safe.

This Fire Action Sign is suitable for offices, factories, warehouses, workshops, schools, hotels, shops, healthcare premises, public buildings and other commercial or industrial locations where the displayed instructions accurately reflect the premises emergency procedures.

The sign should be positioned in prominent locations where staff, visitors and contractors can easily see and read the instructions. Suitable positions may include entrances, corridors, stairways, reception areas, staff notice boards, communal areas and locations close to fire alarm call points where appropriate.

The Fire Action Sign can form part of a wider fire safety signage system alongside Fire Exit, Fire Alarm Call Point, Fire Assembly Point, Fire Extinguisher, Fire Door Keep Shut and directional escape route signs, helping provide consistent fire safety information throughout the premises.

Fire action information should be reviewed whenever the building layout, escape routes, alarm arrangements, assembly point or emergency procedures change. Any blank fields should be completed accurately and checked periodically to ensure the information remains current.

Fire action signage should complement rather than replace a suitable fire risk assessment, emergency plan, staff fire safety training, evacuation drills, maintained fire detection and alarm systems, appropriate firefighting equipment and clearly maintained escape routes.

Manufactured from durable, high quality materials with excellent print clarity and visibility, this Fire Action If You Discover Or Suspect A Fire Sign provides a professional and long lasting solution for displaying comprehensive fire emergency instructions and helping occupants understand the actions required during a fire.
