The AFFF Foam Spray Fire Extinguisher Sign provides clear and highly visible identification of the location and type of an AFFF foam spray fire extinguisher. Displaying the sign directly above or adjacent to the extinguisher helps employees, visitors and other building users quickly recognise the equipment and distinguish it from other extinguisher types provided within the premises.

AFFF stands for Aqueous Film Forming Foam. AFFF foam extinguishers have traditionally been used for suitable Class A fires involving solid combustible materials and Class B fires involving certain flammable liquids, subject to the fire ratings, approvals and operating instructions of the individual extinguisher.

Suitable applications can include offices, warehouses, factories, workshops, garages, commercial premises and other environments where appropriate Class A or Class B fire risks have been identified. The correct extinguisher provision should always be determined according to the specific hazards and fire risk assessment for the premises.

On suitable Class A fires, foam extinguishers can provide a cooling effect that helps reduce the temperature of burning materials such as wood, paper and many textiles. On suitable Class B liquid fires, the foam can form a layer over the fuel surface that helps suppress flammable vapours and reduce the risk of re-ignition.

The AFFF Foam Spray Fire Extinguisher Sign helps users identify the correct extinguisher without relying solely on the appearance or colour coding of the cylinder. This can be particularly useful at fire points where water, foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder or other extinguisher types are installed together.

AFFF foam extinguishers should not be assumed to be suitable for every type of fire. They are not intended for Class C flammable gas fires or Class F fires involving cooking oils and fats unless the individual extinguisher is specifically approved and marked for such an application. Users should always follow the fire classifications and limitations displayed on the extinguisher.

Particular care is required where live electrical equipment is involved. The suitability of a specific foam spray extinguisher for use in the vicinity of electrical equipment should be confirmed from the manufacturers markings, test information and operating instructions. Electrical equipment should be safely isolated where this can be achieved without placing anyone at risk.

The sign should be positioned where it remains clearly visible and accurately identifies the AFFF foam spray extinguisher located below or nearby. The extinguisher should remain readily accessible and should not be obstructed by furniture, stock, machinery, vehicles, deliveries or stored materials.

Users should follow the operating instructions displayed on the extinguisher and should only attempt to tackle a small fire where it is safe and appropriate to do so. A clear means of escape should remain available, and nobody should place themselves at unnecessary risk attempting to fight a developing fire.

If a fire is spreading rapidly, producing significant smoke or cannot be safely controlled, occupants should raise the alarm, evacuate to a place of safety and contact the Fire and Rescue Service in accordance with the premises emergency procedures.

The AFFF Foam Spray Fire Extinguisher Sign can form part of a wider fire equipment identification system alongside Water, CO2 Carbon Dioxide, Dry Powder and Wet Chemical Fire Extinguisher signs, Fire Blanket signs and Fire Point signs. Consistent identification helps users recognise the different types of firefighting equipment available within the premises.

Fire extinguishers should be appropriately inspected and maintained by competent persons to ensure they remain serviceable and ready for use. Any extinguisher that has been discharged, damaged, tampered with or is otherwise suspected of being unserviceable should be reported and dealt with promptly.

Organisations should also be aware that the formulation and regulatory status of firefighting foams can change. Where an existing extinguisher contains AFFF, the product information, servicing requirements and any applicable environmental or disposal requirements should be checked with the extinguisher manufacturer or a competent fire protection provider.

Signage should complement rather than replace an appropriate fire risk assessment, correct extinguisher selection, formal maintenance, staff training and emergency procedures. The suitability of an AFFF foam spray extinguisher should always be confirmed from the individual units fire ratings, markings and manufacturers instructions.

Manufactured from durable, high quality materials with excellent print clarity and visibility, the AFFF Foam Spray Fire Extinguisher Sign provides a professional and long lasting solution for identifying foam firefighting equipment. It helps improve extinguisher recognition, support appropriate equipment selection and ensure AFFF foam spray extinguishers can be quickly located when required.
