DOT 516 Road narrows on both sides ahead sign

The Road Narrows warning sign is used where a single-lane road becomes narrower on both sides, creating a potential hazard for drivers. This sign is typically not required if the narrowing does not eliminate a traffic lane or if the taper is not severe. 

This sign is often confused with the “No Through Road” or “End of Dual Carriageway” sign, but can be identified by the two vertical lines remaining separate and moving closer together, rather than merging.

You’ll usually see this sign in locations where vehicles are forced to travel in closer proximity—such as sharp bends, narrow sections of single carriageway roads, or where center lines are missing or faded. It warns drivers to proceed with caution, especially where larger vehicles like HGVs may have difficulty navigating.
